The option description:

The option allows to specify, what of modes will be used at transition in power savings condition: [S1 (POS)] (in some versions BIOS value looks as [S1 (POS) Only]) or [S3 (STR)] (in some versions BIOS — [S3 Only]). If your motherboard and the power unit are compatible to the second mode, choose it, as more economic. Sometimes there is also a variant [Auto] (or [S1 (POS) and S3 (STR)]), in this case an operating system both modes of power savings can be used.

Let’s short stop on these modes. The majority of the computers supporting specifications ACPI, two modes of power savings allow to use: S1 (POS) and S3 (STR). In the first (it is deciphered as Power on Suspend) a food is disconnected from a hard disk, some cards of expansion, plus, the monitor is extinguished. All other components (the processor, operative memory, a chipset …) work in a regular mode, is possible only transition to the lowered frequencies. Thanks to it awakening occurs very quickly. The second mode (reduction from Suspend to RAM) is characterised much by smaller power consumption. Before transition in it all information on a condition of various components remains in operative memory then all other devices are disconnected, there is only a food on duty. To pay off for it it is necessary longer awakening of the computer. Is still Hibernate or Suspend to Disk, but it does not concern power savings modes. At its use the information on a condition of various components "is dumped" on a hard disk then there is a usual switching-off of a food.

That mode Suspend to RAM (as, however, and Suspend to Disk) functioned without failures, accurate interaction of all drivers of the components established in system is necessary. In the presence of "the curve" driver the computer can not wake up in general or after an exit from a sleeping mode to work with errors. In this case it is necessary to return to less exacting in this plan Power on Suspend.

Mode Suspend to RAM imposes certain restrictions on the power unit: the current given on chain Standby (+5V SB), should be not less than 800 мА (it is recommended 1 ). To modern models of claims in this plan is not present — all of them are compatible to mode Suspend to RAM, problems can arise only with old computers.
