The option description:

At value [Automatic] the regular multiplier of the processor, value [Disabled] is used gives the chance to use distinct from nominal a multiplier if, of course, given possibility is supported by the processor.

The multiplier is a relation of working frequency of the processor to physical frequency of the system tyre.

There are two ways to "force" the processor to work on the frequency which is distinct from the regular. First, it is correction of frequency of the system tyre — remained former the multiplier will cause proportional change of frequency of work of the processor. Secondly, at the fixed frequency of the system tyre correction множителя the processor will lead to natural increase or reduction of total working frequency.

For dispersal it is possible to recognise as an optimum variant a combination of these methods: some reduction or increase множителя together with simultaneous lifting of frequency of the system tyre allow to reach synchronously "ceiling" both on frequency potential of the processor, and on frequency potential of the motherboard. (As practice has shown, for the processor total working frequency, and for the motherboard — frequency of the system tyre becomes limiting factor usually.)

Free change множителя is accessible only in processors to enthusiasts (rather expensive series Extreme Edition from Intel and more democratic at the price of Black Edition from AMD), usual processors resolve only its reduction. It if to speak about modern decisions (family Core from Intel, Athlon X2 and Phenom from AMD). Earlier models — we will tell, Pentium 4, majority Athlon XP — and are at all characterised by the fixed multiplier.
